Dose Zonegran Cause Weight Loss?
Zonegran® (
zonisamide) is a prescription medication used to treat partial
seizures, a certain type of epileptic
seizure. Weight loss is one of the possible side effects that have been reported with this drug.
How Common Is Weight Loss With Zonegran?
In clinical studies, up to 3 percent of people taking Zonegran to treat partial seizures experienced weight loss, compared to 2 percent of people in a similar group not taking it. Appetite loss is also common, occurring in up to 13 percent of people taking Zonegran (compared to 6 percent of those not taking the drug). While some weight loss can be desirable for many people, weight loss in children or losing too much weight can be a problem.
What to Do if This Side Effect Occurs
Weight loss is a common side effect of Zonegran.
If you are noticing bothersome weight loss that is possibly due to the medication, talk with your healthcare provider. He or she may recommend ways to slow down or stop the weight loss. In more severe cases, your healthcare provider may recommend that you switch to a different
epilepsy medication.
