Zonegran and Breastfeeding

Studies on Zonegran and breastfeeding have shown that the medication passes through breast milk, and the manufacturer recommends that women who are breastfeeding avoid the drug. However, the effects this may have on a nursing infant are unknown. Therefore, if you are taking Zonegran and breastfeeding at the same time, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child.

Zonegran and Breastfeeding: An Overview

Zonegran® (zonisamide) is a prescription medication used to treat partial seizures in people with epilepsy. It passes through breast milk in women. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of the drug does not recommend breastfeeding while taking it. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of starting, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.
