Is Vimpat Safe for Breastfeeding Women?

It is not known if Vimpat^® (lacosamide) passes through breast milk in humans. The manufacturer of Vimpat suggests that women not take this medication while breastfeeding. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider about taking Vimpat.

What Does the Research Say?

Studies have shown that Vimpat passes through breast milk in rats. However, is unknown whether the same is true for humans. It is also unknown what problems (if any) Vimpat could cause in a breastfed infant.

Keep in mind that Vimpat is typically used in combination with other seizure medications, which may or may not be acceptable for use during breastfeeding.
