What Is Topamax Used For?

Healthcare providers will often prescribe
Topamax® (topiramate) for treating various conditions that affect the nervous system. But what is Topamax used for, specifically? This medication is used for treating epilepsy and preventing migraines.

Epilepsy
Topamax is approved for use alone (as "monotherapy") for partial seizures or generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It is also approved for use with other medications (as "adjunctive" therapy) for partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

Migraines
Unlike many other migraine medications, which are used to treat a migraine once it starts, Topamax is used to prevent these headaches. Prevention is especially useful for people who have frequent or severe migraines, or migraines that do not respond to other medications.
