Topamax Safety

Although most people tolerate Topamax® (topiramate) well, this medication is not safe for everyone. Before starting treatment, talk to your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you may have and any other medications you are taking (both prescription and nonprescription). For instance, you may not be able to take Topamax safely if you have glaucoma, kidney stones, or severe diarrhea.
 
Other Topamax safety precautions apply to people with certain allergies (including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives) and to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, this medication can cause certain side effects. Some of the most commonly reported side effects include:
 
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nervousness.
