Topamax® (topiramate) is approved for the treatment of various conditions that affect the nervous system. Specifically, it is licensed to prevent migraines and to treat seizures. This drug comes in many strengths, including:
Topamax 15 mg
Topamax 25 mg
Topamax 50 mg
Topamax 100 mg
Topamax 200 mg.
For the prevention of migraines, people are generally advised to start at a lower dose (such as 25 mg once a day) and slowly work up to Topamax 50 mg tablets (one tablet, twice daily).
The recommended dose for epilepsy as monotherapy (used alone) is Topamax 200 mg twice daily. The manufacturer recommends starting with a low dose, such as 25 mg twice a day, and slowly increasing this until you reach 200 mg. When used for adjunctive therapy (in combination with other epilepsy medications), dosing varies, depending on your age and the type of seizures you are experiencing.
