Tegretol Drug Interactions

Lithium
Combining lithium with Tegretol can increase your risk of side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
In general, you should not take MAOIs and Tegretol together. Before you can take Tegretol, you need to stop taking an MAOI for at least 14 days.
 
Nefazodone (Serzone)
Tegretol and nefazodone should not be taken together. Tegretol can significantly decrease the level of nefazodone in your blood, possibly making nefazodone ineffective.
 
Niacin
Niacin products (including non-prescription niacin) can increase the level of Tegretol in your blood, perhaps increasing your risk of side effects. Be aware that many B-complex vitamins contain niacin. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking niacin and Tegretol together.
 
Other Seizure Medications
Some other seizure medications can increase or decrease the level of Tegretol in your blood. Also, Tegretol can increase or decrease the level of other seizure medications in your blood. Your healthcare provider should monitor you closely if you take Tegretol in combination with other seizure medications
 
Propoxyphene
Propoxyphene can increase the level of Tegretol in your blood, perhaps increasing your risk of side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Protease Inhibitors
Protease inhibitors can increase the level of Tegretol in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to lower your Tegretol dose to prevent this drug interaction from occurring.
 
Rifampin
Rifampin may decrease the level of Tegretol in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to increase your Tegretol dose to prevent this.
