Tegretol® (carbamazepine) is a prescription drug that is approved to control seizures in people with epilepsy and to treat trigeminal neuralgia (a painful nerve disorder). While it is not exactly known how the drug works, it is thought to block sodium channels in the brain, as well as nerve signals that cause pain. Among the factors that can affect the dose of Tegretol that your healthcare provider recommends are your age and weight, other medications you may be taking, and other medical conditions you may have.
