Status epilepticus is a condition that occurs as a result of an abnormally prolonged seizure. It also occurs when a person does not fully regain consciousness between seizures. People with epilepsy are at an increased risk for status epilepticus, although people without a history of seizures can also develop this potentially life-threatening condition. A seizure lasting longer than five minutes may be status epilepticus and requires immediate medical attention. Treatment may involve certain medications or life-saving measures (such as administering oxygen).
