Sabril Side Effects

Seek medical treatment immediately if you are taking Sabril and develop any type of vision change, as permanent vision loss is a commonly reported side effect. Sabril can cause other common problems, such as fatigue, dizziness, and irritability. If you develop anything that doesn't seem right, contact your healthcare provider, as this drug can cause a number of potentially serious side effects.

An Introduction to Sabril Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Sabril® (vigabatrin) may cause side effects. However, the risk for very serious side effects, including permanent vision loss, is quite high with this medication. This is why Sabril is generally used as a "last resort."

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Sabril. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Sabril in Adults and Older Children

Sabril has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies in adults or children age 10 and older, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Sabril were documented and compared to reactions that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it is possible to see what Sabril side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group taking the placebo.

In these studies, the most common Sabril side effects in adults and children age 10 and older included:

  • Fatigue -- in up to 40 percent of people
  • At least some degree of permanent vision loss -- in "at least 30 percent of people" (exact percentage was not provided)
  • Drowsiness -- up to 26 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 26 percent
  • Irritability -- up to 23 percent
  • Involuntary eye movements -- up to 19 percent.

Other common side effects in adults or children age 10 and older, occurring in 10 percent to 17 percent of people, included:

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Diarrhea
  • Walking pattern "gait" changes
  • Weight gain
  • Shakiness (tremors)
  • Memory problems
  • Coordination problems
  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • Throat pain
  • Cough.

Some of these common side effects are also potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider (see the section below for more information).
