Generic Sabril

There are no generic Sabril (vigabatrin) products available at this time. This is because brand-name Sabril is protected by exclusivity rights that prevent any company from making a generic version of the medication. However, this may change when the first of the exclusivity rights expires in August 2014. After this time, companies may be able to make a generic Sabril product.

Can I Buy Generic Sabril?

Sabril® (vigabatrin) is a prescription seizure medication. It is approved to treat certain types of serious seizures. It is used only in certain situations, as it has a high risk for causing permanent vision loss.

Sabril is manufactured by Lundbeck. It is currently under the protection of exclusivity rights that prevent any generic versions of Sabril from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Sabril is protected from generic competition by exclusivity rights, which are similar to patents. The first of these exclusivity rights is set to expire in August 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of Sabril could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period, such as lawsuits or new exclusivity rights.

Is Vigabatrin a Generic Sabril?

No -- vigabatrin is the active ingredient in Sabril, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
