An Introduction to Side Effects of Primidone
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with
primidone (
Mysoline®). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate primidone quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Primidone
Primidone is an older
seizure medication, approved many years ago. With newer medications, side effects are carefully documented, and the exact percentage of people that develop each side effect is known. With older medications, like primidone, the information on side effects is less specific, and exact percentages are not reported.
The most common side effects of primidone (especially in people first starting the medication) include:
- Coordination problems
- A spinning sensation (vertigo).
In general, the above side effects usually improve with time. Other common side effects include:
- Nausea, vomiting, or appetite loss
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction or ED)
- Double vision or unusual eye movements
- Drowsiness.
