Potiga™ (
ezogabine) is a prescription medication approved to treat partial-onset
seizures (also known as partial
seizures or focal seizures). It is approved for use in adults age 18 and older, and must be used in combination with other seizure medications.
Who Makes This Medication?
Potiga is made by Catalent Pharma Solutions for GlaxoSmithKline.
Seizures are the result of brief changes in how the brain's electrical system works. It is not known exactly how Potiga works for treating seizures. Studies suggest that it may work by affecting potassium channels in the brain (helping them to stay in the "open" position), preventing the abnormal activity from "firing" and spreading to other parts of the brain. This action helps to control seizures.
Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Potiga include the following:
- Potiga comes in tablet form. It is usually taken by mouth three times a day.
- This medication can be taken with or without food.
- For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.
- As with other seizure medications, do not stop taking Potiga without your healthcare provider's approval. When you stop taking this medication, it should usually be stopped gradually over a period of at least three weeks.
