Oxtellar XR Drug Interactions

Oxtellar XR Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Oxtellar XR is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Oxtellar XR may decrease blood levels of aripiprazole, potentially making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may choose to increase your aripiprazole dose if you take these medications together.
Calcium Channel Blockers
Oxtellar XR can decrease blood levels of calcium channel blocker medicines, potentially making them less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to increase your calcium channel blocker dosage if you take Oxtellar XR with a calcium channel blocker.
Certain Other Anti-Seizure Medicines
Certain other anti-seizure medications (antiepileptics) can decrease blood levels of Oxtellar XR. Your healthcare provider may choose to start you on a higher Oxtellar XR dose (900 mg a day) if you take it in combination with carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or phenytoin. Your dose will then be slowly increased as needed. If you take Oxtellar XR with valproate medicines, your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely and increase your Oxtellar XR dosage if needed.
Oxtellar XR can decrease the level of cyclosporine in your blood, which could make it less effective. If you take Oxtellar XR with cyclosporine, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your cyclosporine dosage.
Medications That Can Reduce Blood Sodium Levels
Oxtellar XR can cause the level of sodium in your blood to be low, which could cause potentially serious side effects. Other medications that also decrease blood sodium levels may add to this effect. Many medications have the potential to cause low blood sodium levels; therefore, make sure your healthcare provider knows about all the medicines you are taking.
Oral Contraceptives
Oxtellar XR can make oral contraceptives less effective, increasing your risk for unintentional pregnancy. It is recommended that non-hormonal methods of birth control be used during Oxtellar XR treatment.
