Neurontin for Children

Neurontin® (gabapentin) is a prescription medication used to treat epilepsy and nerve pain caused by shingles. This medication is approved for these uses in adults. However, for children, Neurontin is only approved to treat partial seizures. The drug should only be used in children who are at least three years old or older; it is not approved for younger children.

It is not known exactly how Neurontin works for nerve pain, nor is it clear how the drug works to prevent partial seizures in people with epilepsy. The medication does affect certain calcium channels in the brain, and this may be how it works for seizures and nerve pain.

(Click Neurontin Uses for more information on using Neurontin for children who have partial seizures. This article discusses how the drug works and provides additional detail on its approved uses.)
