Negative Effects of Neurontin

Although most people have no problems with Neurontin® (gabapentin), negative effects are possible. Because this medication is not suitable for everyone, talk to your healthcare provider about any possible problems that may apply to you. For instance, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of any other medical conditions you may have and any other medications you are taking (including nonprescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements) before starting treatment with Neurontin. Negative effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Coordination problems
  • Nausea or vomiting.

Although negative effects of Neurontin tend to be minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider, there are some serious side effects that require immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience problems such as depression, severe dizziness, or suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

Other warnings and precautions apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as people who have certain allergies (including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives). Also, you may not be able to take Neurontin if you have certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease.
