Although most people tolerate Vimpat well, adverse effects are possible. Some of the commonly reported side effects of Vimpat include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. When side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you develop any serious side effects, such as fainting, difficulty breathing, or suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
An Introduction to Vimpat Side EffectsAs with any medicine, Vimpat® (lacosamide) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Vimpat. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Vimpat side effects with you.)
Common Side Effects of VimpatVimpat has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Vimpat (plus their usual seizure medications) were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking their usual seizure medications plus a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what Vimpat side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group taking the placebo.
Because Vimpat was added to other seizure medications (and not used by itself) in clinical studies, the information from these studies probably does not accurately reflect the true incidence of side effects actually caused by Vimpat.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Vimpat (plus other seizure medications) included:
- Dizziness -- in up to 53 percent of people
- Nausea -- up to 17 percent
- Vomiting -- up to 16 percent
- Double vision -- up to 16 percent
- Blurred vision -- up to 16 percent
- Fatigue -- up to 15 percent
- Coordination problems -- up to 15 percent.
Other common side effects, occurring in 2 to 14 percent of people, included (but were not limited to):
- A spinning sensation (vertigo)
- Walking gait changes
- General weakness
- Shakiness (tremors)
- Involuntary eye movements
- Balance problems
- Memory problems.
