Epilepsy Home > Tegretol Drug Information

Tegretol® (carbamazepine) is a prescription drug approved to treat the following conditions:
  • Epilepsy: Tegretol is approved to treat various types of seizures.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia: Tegretol is also approved to treat pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve condition that causes episodes of facial pain (typically, cheek or jaw pain).
This medication is believed to work by blocking sodium channels in the brain, as well as nerve signals that cause pain. It is generally well tolerated. However, as with any medicine, side effects may occur. Commonly reported reactions include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
Before using Tegretol, make sure your healthcare provider has up-to-date information on any other drugs you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, as well as any allergies you may have, including to medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
