Tegretol® (carbamazepine) is a prescription drug approved to treat the following conditions:
- Epilepsy: Tegretol is approved to treat various types of seizures.
- Trigeminal neuralgia: Tegretol is also approved to treat pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve condition that causes episodes of facial pain (typically, cheek or jaw pain).
This medication is believed to work by blocking sodium channels in the brain, as well as nerve signals that cause pain. It is generally well tolerated. However, as with any medicine, side effects may occur. Commonly reported reactions include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
