How Does Lamictal XR Work?

Seizures are the result of brief changes in how the brain's electrical system works. It is not known exactly how Lamictal XR works to treat seizures. Studies suggest that it may work by affecting sodium channels in the brain, preventing the abnormal activity from "firing" and spreading to other parts of the brain. This action helps control seizures.
 

Using Lamictal XR in Children

Lamictal XR can be used in people age 13 and older. It is not approved for younger children, as it has not been adequately studied in this age group. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of giving Lamictal XR to children.
 

Off-Label Lamictal XR Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Lamictal XR for something other than partial-onset seizures. Based on approved or off-label uses of the short-acting version of this medication (Lamictal®), it is expected that Lamictal XR may be used off-label to treat the following conditions:
