Keppra Dosage

The recommended starting Keppra dosage for treating myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents (age 12 and older) and for treating partial or grand mal seizures in adults and adolescents (age 16 and older) is 500 mg twice daily. If needed, your healthcare provider may slowly increase your daily Keppra dosage until your seizures are under control or you develop bothersome Keppra side effects.

Keppra Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of Keppra® (levetiracetam) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The type of seizures you have
  • Other medications you may be taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Your age and weight.

As is always the case, do not adjust your Keppra dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so. The following Keppra dosages are for people with healthy kidneys. If you have kidney disease (including kidney failure), you may need a lower Keppra dosage.

Keppra Dosing for Myoclonic Seizures
The recommended starting Keppra dose for treating myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents age 12 and older is Keppra 500 mg twice daily. Typically, your healthcare provider will slowly increase your Keppra dose until your seizures are controlled or you develop bothersome Keppra side effects. The maximum Keppra dose is Keppra 3000 mg total per day.

Keppra Dosing for Partial or Grand Mal Seizures
The recommended starting Keppra dose for treating partial seizures or generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures in adults and adolescents age 16 and older is Keppra 500 mg twice daily. Typically, your healthcare provider will slowly increase your Keppra dose until your seizures are controlled or you develop bothersome side effects. For this age group, the maximum Keppra dose is Keppra 3000 mg total per day.

For children age 4 to 15 years old with partial seizures (or children age 6 to 15 years old with grand mal seizures), the recommended Keppra dose depends on weight. Usually, the starting dose is Keppra 10 mg per kg twice daily (about 4.5 mg per pound twice daily). Your child's healthcare provider will slowly increase the dose until an effective dose is reached (or your child develops bothersome side effects).
