Keppra XR and Breastfeeding

Clinical studies on Keppra XR (levetiracetam XR) and breastfeeding show that the drug passes through breast milk in women. However, it is not known if it causes problems in nursing infants. Before taking Keppra XR, breastfeeding women should talk to their healthcare providers about any potential risks. Even if your healthcare provider gives permission to breastfeed, you should watch for side effects in your child.

An Overview of Keppra XR and Breastfeeding

Keppra XR™ (levetiracetam XR) is a prescription medication used to treat partial seizures in people with epilepsy. It passes through breast milk in humans. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of Keppra XR recommends that breastfeeding women avoid taking this medication. Therefore, check with your healthcare provider before taking Keppra XR while breastfeeding.

What Does the Research Say?

While research has demonstrated that Keppra XR passes through breast milk in women, it is not known if it causes problems in breastfed infants. If your healthcare provider recommends taking Keppra XR while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child. In particular, watch for weight loss, feeding problems, drowsiness, and developmental delays in your infant.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

It is important to talk with your healthcare provider before taking Keppra XR if you are breastfeeding. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about Keppra XR and breastfeeding in your particular situation.
