Fycompa Dosage

When treating partial seizures with Fycompa tablets, the recommended initial dosage is usually 2 mg once a day at bedtime. However, this amount may need to be increased. Your healthcare provider will slowly adjust your dose based on a number of factors, including how well you tolerate this drug and how well your seizures are controlled, among other things.

An Introduction to Dosing With Fycompa

The dose of Fycompa™ (perampanel) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • How well your seizures are controlled
  • How well you tolerate the medication
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Fycompa Dosage?

The usual recommended initial dosage of Fycompa for controlling partial seizures in people with epilepsy is 2 mg a day. This amount is normally slowly increased, as needed, in increments of 2 mg a day, no more often than once a week. In older adults and people with liver disease, however, dose increases should occur no more often than once every two weeks.

Most people will be treated with Fycompa doses that range between 4 mg and 12 mg a day. The amount you end up taking will be individualized based on how well your seizures are controlled and whether you experience side effects. In clinical trials, 12 mg a day was somewhat more effective at reducing seizures, but was also associated with more side effects.

People with liver disease may have higher blood levels of Fycompa. Therefore, the maximum recommended dosage is 6 mg a day for people with mild liver disease and 4 mg a day for people with moderate liver disease. Fycompa is not recommended for use in people with severe liver disease. It is also not recommended for use in people with severe kidney disease.

Certain other anti-seizure medications can reduce blood levels of Fycompa. This includes the medications carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Epitol®, Equetro®, Tegretol®), oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®), oxcarbazepine extended-release (Oxtellar XR™), and phenytoin (Dilantin®, Phenytek®). The usual recommended starting dose of Fycompa in people who are taking these other medicines is 4 mg a day. This amount is then slowly increased, if needed, no more often than once a week.
