Fycompa and Breastfeeding
It is unknown if Fycompa (perampanel) passes through breast milk in women or if it would harm a nursing infant. The manufacturer recommends that women use this drug with caution while breastfeeding, as it has been shown to pass through the breast milk of rats. If you use this drug while nursing, watch for irritability, unexplained crying, and other side effects in your child.
Fycompa™ (perampanel) is a prescription medication used to treat a type of seizure known as partial-onset seizure. At this time, it is unknown whether Fycompa passes through breast milk in humans.
The manufacturer recommends that this medication be used with caution in women who are breastfeeding. Therefore, if you are currently breastfeeding a child or plan to start, you should discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to taking Fycompa.
Fycompa has been shown to pass through the breast milk of rats. However, the medication has not been studied in breastfeeding women. Therefore, it is unknown whether the drug passes through human breast milk or if it would harm a nursing child.
While this lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to keep in mind that medications are rarely studied in breastfeeding women. This is because doing so could expose a nursing infant, who would otherwise not benefit from the drug, to potential risks.
Unfortunately, there is too little information about Fycompa and breastfeeding to determine how safe it is in this situation. Because many medicines pass through breast milk, the manufacturer of Fycompa recommends it be used cautiously in women who are nursing a child.
If your healthcare provider recommends using Fycompa while breastfeeding, watch your child for any possible side effects and report any potential problems to your child's healthcare provider. These may include:
- Excessive sleepiness
- Unexplained crying
- Difficulty feeding.
It should also be noted that Fycompa is only approved for use in combination with other anti-seizure medications. Therefore, it is important to also learn about the safety of using the other medications you are taking while breastfeeding.
