Seizure Medications and Suicide

Suggestions for Seizure Medications and Suicide

Seizure medications are often medically essential. For many people, the benefit of using seizure medications greatly outweighs the risk of suicidal thinking or behavior. The FDA recommends that people who take seizure medications (and their friends and family) should watch for any warning signs, such as:

  • Thinking about suicide
  • Talking about suicide
  • Depression (or a worsening of preexisting depression)
  • Preoccupation with death and dying
  • Giving away valued possessions.

Patients (or their family or friends) should contact a healthcare provider immediately if there is any concern (or any warning signs) about suicidal thinking or behavior in people taking seizure medications.
