Diazepam (
Valium®) is a medication often prescribed for the treatment of
anxiety, muscle spasms, and alcohol withdrawal. It is also approved to be used with other medications to treat
seizures. Most people have no problems when taking it. However, diazepam does pose risks that you should be aware of before starting treatment.
For example, it is important to know that a number of side effects are possible with diazepam. In clinical studies, some of the problems that were reported with this drug included bladder or bowel control problems, slurred speech, drowsiness, and fatigue. Side effects of diazepam are generally mild and, in most cases, either do not require treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
One of the more serious risks with diazepam is its significant potential for abuse. The medication can cause both psychological and physical abuse. As such, it is classified as a controlled substance in the United States, which means there are special rules and regulations for prescribing and dispensing it.
Because people can become addicted to this medication, diazepam is generally not recommended for people with a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
