Serious Side Effects

Some Depakote ER side effects, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:

Depression
Signs of liver damage, such as yellow eyes or skin (jaundice)
Signs of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), such as:

Severe abdominal pain (or stomach pain)
Nausea and vomiting
Loss of appetite

Worsening of seizures
Low body temperature (below 95 degrees F), known as hypothermia
Unexplained bruising or bleeding
Signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, and unexplained swelling
Suicidal thinking or behavior (see Seizure Medications and Suicide).

Less Common Depakote ER Side Effects

There are other possible side effects that occur less frequently. These side effects occur in less than 5 percent of people. For these side effects, however, it is difficult to tell whether they are actually caused by Depakote ER or other factors.

Some of these less common but possible Depakote ER side effects include:

Flu symptoms, such as a fever and chills
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Constipation
Dry mouth
Gas
Muscle pain
Shakiness (tremors)
"Pink eye" (conjunctivitis)
Bladder infections (urinary tract infections or UTIs)
Weight gain (see Depakote ER and Weight Gain)
Insomnia (see Depakote ER and Insomnia)
A spinning sensation (vertigo).
