Carbatrol® (carbamazepine) is available by prescription and is approved for controlling various types of epileptic seizures and for alleviating the pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia (a painful nerve condition). Although it is not known exactly how the drug works, it is thought that it helps to block sodium channels in the brain, as well as certain nerve signals that cause pain. Side effects of Carbatrol may include dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea.
