Carbatrol Dosage: An Introduction
The dose of
Carbatrol® (
carbamazepine) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- The condition being treated
- Other medications you may be taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your Carbatrol dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Carbatrol Dosage for Epilepsy
For adults and children over 12 years old, the recommended starting dose is Carbatrol 200 mg, taken two times a day. Your healthcare provider will increase your dose slowly as necessary to control your
seizures.
Children under 12 years old who are already taking at least 400 mg per day of an immediate-release form of carbamazepine (such as
Tegretol®) can switch to Carbatrol. The total daily dose of carbamazepine is kept the same, but Carbatrol will be taken just twice a day. For example, if your child was taking Tegretol 100 mg four times daily, he or she could be switched to Carbatrol 200 mg twice daily.
Carbatrol Dosage for Trigeminal Neuralgia
The recommended starting dose for treating trigeminal neuralgia is Carbatrol 200 mg, taken once daily on the first day. On the second day, the dose is usually increased to Carbatrol 200 mg twice daily. After that, your healthcare provider may increase your Carbatrol dose as necessary in order to control your trigeminal neuralgia symptoms.
